Dollarbeg Castle & the local area
DOLLARBEG CASTLE can be found on the outskirts of Dollar in Clackmannanshire (the 'Wee County' - the smallest county in Scotland). Dollar is in the foothills of the Ochil Hills which are great for hiking. In the town you will find a good range of amenities, including:
- a good number of shops, including delicatessen supplying quality produce
- a well presented pub, serving good pub-style food
- a cafe
- many other amenities and even it's own museum!
Castle Campbell, the location used in the film 'Rob Roy', is only 3 miles away and a wonderful place for walking with beautiful scenery through Dollar Glen. This area has lovely woodland trails, pretty burns, the rushing waterfalls of the Falls of Devon and fantastic views of Dollar below. Caldron Linn (River Devon) is a lovely waterfall just a couple of miles from the castle. Just outside the town is the Japanese Garden (Cowden).
Kinross and Dunfermline are both within 12 miles. The iconic town Dunfermline, a former Royal Burgh, is home to The Tomb Of King Robert The Bruce, which can be found within the historic Dunfermline Abbey. Kinross is where Mary Queen of Scots famously escaped from her prison at Lochleven Castle on 2nd May 1568. Lochleven Castle is situated on a small island in the middle of Loch Leven. 8 miles away is Alloa Tower, one of the earliest and largest Scottish Tower Houses (run by National Trust for Scotland).
The historic city of Stirling is only 12 miles away, with it’s famous Castle (the birthplace and residence of several Scottish Kings), the old prison and the magnificent Wallace Monument to visit. Alva Glen and Gartmorn Dam Country Park are in close proximity to Dollarbeg Castle and are both great for walking. The Falls of Bracklinn and Loch Lomond are both within an hours drive, with the latter also offering a Visitor / Sea Life centre, shops, cafes and boat trips.
The site of the Battle of Bannockburn is but 11 miles from the Castle and is famous for the 1314 victory of the army of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots over the army of King Edward II of England.
Further afield you will find many other points of interest, most notably Perthshire, picturesque Blair Athol with it's historic Castle and the Cairngorms National Park, home to the summer residence of the British Royal Family, Balmoral Castle & Estate (where you will find the UK's largest pyramid!).
